Behavior of a Warm Mix Asphalt Containing a Blast Furnace Slag

Warm mix asphalt (WMA) technology helps to decrease manufacturing temperature in traditional hot mix asphalts (HMA), which reduces emissions that are detrimental to the environment. For the case of asphalt pavements, WMA technology, which uses recycled materials such as blast furnace slag (BFS), this could be an interesting alternative technique.

The swelling potential of steel slag is of particular importance because of the free lime or magnesia in the slag, which, if ignored, could result in pavement cracking (Norton 1979).The use of steel slag in paving mixes should be limited to replacement of either the fine or the coarse aggregate fraction, but not both, because hot-mix asphalt ...

The Road to Sustainability: Using Steel Slag for Asphalt ...

According to the Washington State Department of Transportation's Use of Steel Slag Aggregate in Pavements report in 2015, a high iron oxide content in steel slag aggregates creates pavement that is both hard and dense, making it a superior choice over natural aggregates such as rocks in creating hot mix asphalt.. Also, when used in bituminous pavements, slag offers the advantages …

Performance of Steel Slag Aggregates in Hot-Mix Asphalt ...

The 2016 trial project included a one-mile trial section of hot-mix asphalt pavement constructed using steel slag aggregate as a replacement for 20 percent of the coarse aggregate in the HMA. The trial section was part of a project that improved five miles of SR 203 by grinding out the existing pavement and replacing it with new pavement.
